Hanjin Heavy wins US$250 mln order for 4 container ships

SEOUL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., a South Korean shipbuilder, said Wednesday that it has won a US$250 million order to build four container ships. Under the deal with an Asian shipping firm, Hanjin Heavy will build the vessels that each can carry 4,700 20-foot container boxes, the company said. Hanjin Heavy did not reveal the name of the buyer. Late last month, the shipbuilder's labor union ended a six-month strike and will return to work soon. In December last year, the shipyard's labor union launched a full-scale strike in opposition to a reduction in its workforce. The company shut down its main dockyard and two plants in this southern port city in February. Union members have been in dispute with management since June 2009, staging frequent stoppages that have forced the shipyard to use outside labor to avoid delivery delays. Shares of Hanjin Heavy were trading at 37,700 won on the Seoul bourse as of 11:20 a.m., up 2.45 percent.
