Navy Commander Reiterates Defensive Nature of Iran's Military Power

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari stressed the high military capability of the Iranian Armed Forces, but meantime underscored that the country's strong military power merely serves defensive purposes.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony held to welcome back the Iranian Navy's 14th fleet of warships after a 66-day mission in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the Rear Admiral said equipments such as torpedoes, missiles, mines, tanks, artilleries, etc are all a defensive need and requirement for the Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy.
"Army's capabilities in all fields are in line with defending the country's interests in the sea, because we believe that we, similar to the other countries of the world, should protect our interests in the international waters," he added.
The commander further underlined that the Navy enjoys high coast-to-sea, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile capabilities, and said the country is now able to produce all types of missiles needed in the Navy.
The 14th flotilla returned home on Monday after accomplishing a nearly two-month-long mission in the Gulf of Aden, where it defended the country's cargo ships and oil tankers against Somali pirates.
The Iranian Navy's 14th fleet of warships was comprised of IRI Bandar Abbas Warship and IRI Shahid Naqdi Destroyer and also a submarine named Younus.
