Iran Deplores Britain's Plan for Continued Military Buildup in Afghanistan
TEHRAN (FNA)- Spokesman of the Iranian foreign ministry blasted London's plan for continuing its military presence in Afghanistan under new pretexts, and called on foreign forces to leave the war-torn country and stop undermining stability and security of the region.
Speaking to reporters during his weekly press conference here in Tehran on Tuesday, Ramin Mehman-Parast said that the western states that have deployed forces in Afghanistan are now in a very complicated situation, given the pressure of the public opinion, their armies' high death toll, heavy financial costs of the war and ongoing economic crisis.
He cautioned that these problems have troubled the western states' continued military presence in Afghanistan and some western officials are, hence, seeking to continue the mission in other forms in a bid to achieve their goals.
At a joint media conference with President Hamid Karzai, British Prim Minister David Cameron said a number of British troops would leave in 2011 and 2012, but combat operations would cease by the end of 2014.
Cameron announced that 120 members of the UK military would work as trainers at an "Afghan Sandhurst".
"The president and I have been discussing our plan to build an Afghanistan Sandhurst - a model academy for training the Afghan army officers of the future that will form the backbone of your already successful army," Cameron told reporters.
Cameron arrived in Afghanistan on Monday, as it was revealed a soldier had gone missing from his checkpoint in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.
The Iranian foreign ministry presser further called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Afghanistan, and stressed, "It seems that the region's security will be better off and we will witness more stability with their withdrawal."
