Key dates in PyeongChang's bid for the Winter Olympic Games
SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's alpine city of PyeongChang, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul, was selected as the host city for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games during an International Olympic Committee meeting in Durban, South Africa, on Wednesday (local time). The following is a chronology of key events leading to PyeongChang's successful bid.
2003
Jan. 11 -- PyeongChang makes a bid to win the right to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, vying with Vancouver, Canada, and Salzburg, Austria.
July 2 -- PyeongChang loses out to Canada's Vancouver in its bid for the 2010 Olympiad after a run-off vote.
2005
July 28 -- PyeongChang announces its run for the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, competing against Salzburg, Austria, and Sochi, Russia.
2007
July 5 -- PyeongChang loses to Russia's Sochi in its bid to host the 2014 Games after a run-off vote.
2010
March 10 -- South Korea's 2018 Winter Olympics bidding committee for PyeongChang submits a bid file to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
June 22 -- The IOC selects PyeongChanng as a final candidate to host the 2018 Games together with Germany's Munich and France's Annecy.
