Police arrest more than 8,300 foreign criminals
SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- Police said Thursday they have arrested 8,311 foreigners for gambling, violence and other crimes in the past three months.
The figure, which is 26.7 percent higher than the 6,560 arrested during the same period a year ago, shows crimes by foreigners are on the rise in South Korea, home to more than 1.2 million foreigners, the National Police Agency said after conducting an intensive three-month-long crackdown on foreign criminals.
Police took 341 foreigners into custody for investigation during the period, the agency said.
The number of those apprehended for five major crimes -- murder, robbery, rape, theft and violence -- also rose 23.1 percent year-on-year.
By nationality, Chinese topped the list of foreigners arrested with 3,681, followed by 478 Vietnamese, 266 Mongolians and 160 Americans, according to the agency.
