SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top maker of memory chips and liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, said Thursday its second-quarter operating profit is estimated to have slumped 26.2 percent from one year ago mainly due to its flagging display division.
Samsung put its operating profit for the April-June period at an estimated 3.7 trillion won (US$3.47 billion), compared with a record operating profit of 5.01 trillion won a year ago, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.

(LEAD) Inflation stays high for S. Korea's economy: finance ministry
SEOUL -- South Korea's economy continues to face a high level of inflation despite continued improvements in employment and overall economic situations, the finance ministry said Thursday.
External uncertainties such as the lingering fiscal crisis in Europe also remain high so in response the government will keep a close tab on market situations at home and abroad, according to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.

(3rd LD) South Korea's PyeongChang wins bid for 2018 Winter Olympics
DURBAN, South Africa -- PyeongChang won the bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics in a vote by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) here on Wednesday, succeeding in its third attempt to bring the Winter Games to South Korea for the first time.
In the secret ballot during the 123rd IOC session, PyeongChang earned 63 of the 95 votes cast in a landslide win, while Munich of Germany had 25 votes and Annecy of France had seven.

S. Korea to impose lowered tariffs on more pork imports: minister
SEOUL -- South Korea will expand the amount of imported pork subject to lower tariffs as part of efforts to stabilize food prices and ease inflationary pressure, the nation's top economic policymaker said Thursday.
"We will significantly expand the amount of pork imports subject to lower tariff rates, while at the same time encouraging (pork) producers and distributors to voluntarily cooperate in stabilizing prices," Finance Minister Bahk Jae-wan told an anti-inflation policy meeting.

Number of one-member households grows amid aging population: data
SEOUL -- The number of one-member households in South Korea jumped in 2010 compared to five years ago mainly due to the nation's fast-aging population, a report showed Thursday.
The number of households composed of a single member totaled 4.14 million as of November last year, up from the 3.17 million tallied in 2005, according to the report by Statistics Korea.
