SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez will visit South Korea next week for talks expected to focus on promoting cooperation in economy, defense and culture, officials said Thursday.
Jimenez will arrive Wednesday and hold talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan next Thursday on deepening practical cooperation in renewable energy, aerospace, defense and cultural exchanges, Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae told reporters.
Jimenez's two-day visit will also include a meeting with President Lee Myung-bak, and the two sides will share views about security conditions on the Korean Peninsula, Cho said.
Expectations of rising trade between South Korea and the European Union (EU) are high after a landmark free trade agreement between the two sides took effect this month.
South Korea and Spain established diplomatic relations in 1950. Two-way trade between the countries totaled some US$2.8 billion last year, according to ministry data.
Meanwhile, Cho said the South Korean government welcomed last week's endorsement of a new constitution in Morocco, which was introduced to soothe protests triggered by uprisings in the Arab world.
"The new constitution in Morocco, an example of political development in a peaceful and democratic manner, is expected to help stabilize situations in the Middle East," Cho told reporters.
