Russian singer Alsou becomes UNESCO Artist for Peace
PARIS, July 8 (Itar-Tass) -- Popular Russian singer Alsou was awarded
the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace by the organization's Director
General Irina Bokova on Thursday "in recognition of her commitment to help
the most vulnerable people throughout the world, her charitable activities
aiming to empower childhood development, and her dedication to the ideals
and aims of the Organization."
Bokova said the award was due to the "recognition of the outstanding
talent and adherence to UNESCO values."
Alsou thanked Bokova for "the most honorary and respected title in
modern world" and said she would finance humanitarian projects with
proceeds from her new album of lullabies which is to come out in autumn.
She also eyes to hold fireworks festivals under UNESCO aegis and use the
proceeds to finance charity events of the organization.
Alsou Abramova, born in 1983 in Tatarstan, is one of the most popular
singers in the Russian Federation. She won international recognition at
the age of 15 with her first recording, Alsou. In 2000, following the
success of the album, Alsou signed a contract with a record company for
seven more albums. In the same year, she won the second place in the
Eurovision Song Contest.
Alsou has recorded duos with artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Bon
Jovi and the rapper Nelly. In 2001, she won the Best Russian Singer
MTV-Europe Music Award. The artist is furthermore one of the founders and
organizers of the International Folk Music Festival of Peoples of the
Volga River that attracts thousands of spectators every year.
Engaged in numerous charitable projects, Alsou created the Rainbow
Foundation with her father, Senator Ralif Safin. The Foundation helps
restore schools and hospitals, build churches and mosques and assists
underprivileged people worldwide, UNESCO said.
UNESCO Artists for Peace are internationally-renowned personalities
who use their influence, charisma and prestige to help promote UNESCO's
message and programs. UNESCO works with these distinguished personalities
in order to heighten public awareness of the Organization's work in
culture, education, the sciences, and communication.
