Saemangeum 'mega resort' development to kickoff this month
GUNSAN, South Korea, July 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korean developers said Saturday that they plan to start work this month on a "mega resort" construction project along the world's longest seawall on the country's southwest coast.
JY Heavy Industries Co., which is leading a local consortium, said 30 hectares of land between Sinsi and Yami islands that is connected to land by the seawall will be developed first. It said the remaining 165 hectares of land set aside for the resort will be built up in due course.
The work is part of the 3.45 trillion won (US$3.26 billion) masterplan to create a marine tourism resort that is expected to generate economic growth for largely rural region. Developers said in early February that they will build a hotel, clubhouse and commercial district by 2017 on land reclaimed along the seawall. This is expected to be followed by the construction of a medical center, aquarium and golf course in the following years.
Once complete around 2025, the resort project could provide work for 115,000 people and have an economic impact totaling 23 trillion won.
The 33.9-kilometer-long Saemangeum seawall links the port of Gunsan, 274 kilometers southwest of Seoul on the country's western coast, with the scenic Byeonsan Peninsula. After 20 years of work, it was completed in April 2010 at a cost of 2.9 trillion won. Once the seawater is removed, Saemangeum will create 40.100 hectares of new land and a freshwater lake.
The heavy industry company, which mainly makes blocks for ships in Gunsan, meanwhile said that the resort is expected to attract large numbers of tourists and vacationers once it is completed. It pointed out that more than 10 million people have come to see Saemangeum so far even though there are very few amenities.
