Iran Reiterates Deterrent Nature of Recent Missile Drills

TEHRAN (FNA)- The recent missile wargames conducted by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) had a deterrent nature and were aimed at warning the alien forces to keep out of the region while conveying a message of peace and friendship to the regional states, a top military commander stated.
Speaking to reporters about the achievements of the IRGC's recent missile drills, codenamed "Payambar-e Azam (The Great Messenger) 6", Commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh told reporters, "The drills had a message of peace and friendship for the regional countries."

"We are not seen as a threat to these countries," Hajizadeh reiterated.

"Those who are hostile to the Islamic Republic of Iran definitely have the right to be concerned about the drills, but we didn't hear any feeling of concern from the side of the regional countries since our moves and actions have always been in pursuit of defensive goals."

"We are entitled to the right to growingly strengthen ourselves to protect the Islamic Iran and we naturally increase our power on a daily basis until we acquire full (power of) deterrence."

"Of course, our conditions today show the same thing (that we have acquired a high level of deterrence) as military threats are now far away from us," the commander reiterated.

Tehran launched an arms development program during the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war on Iran, to compensate for a US weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, fighter jets and other high-tech weapons.

Yet, Iranian officials have always stressed that the country's military and arms programs serve defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to any other country.

Late in June, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei reiterated that Iran's weapons development program merely serves defensive purposes.

Addressing a group of armed forces personnel, Ayatollah Khamenei said, "The main aim behind arms production in the Islamic Republic is to defend the country and counter the bullying enemies, whereas the West produces such arms for trade purposes and adding up to the wealth of owners of arms manufacturing companies."
