Police Seize 700kg of Illicit Drugs in Southeastern Iran in One Day

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Law Enforcement Police announced seizure of large amounts of narcotics in one day of operations in the country's Southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan.
"More than 700kg of narcotics was discovered and seized from drug-traffickers in the province yesterday," Sistan and Balouchestan's Police Chief Hamid Fahimi-Raad announced on Saturday.
The commander added that the seizure included 495kg of the opium confiscated in a police operation near the town of Saravan and after armed clash between police forces and drug-traffickers.
Also anti-narcotics police squad in Shahid Sadoqi checkpoint near the provincial capital city of Zahedan discovered and seized 187.6kg of opium, 32.3kg of heroin.
Iran lies on a transit corridor between opium producing Afghanistan and drug dealers in Europe.
The Islamic Republic has emerged as the leading country fighting drug trafficking after making 89 percent of the world's total opium seizures.
The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations in recent months.
The Iranian anti-narcotic police have always staged periodic, but short-term, operations against drug traffickers and dealers, but latest reports - which among others indicate an improved and systematic dissemination of information - reveal that the world's most forefront and dedicated anti-narcotic force (as UN drug-campaign assessments put it) have embarked on a long-term countrywide plan to intensify the crack down on the drug trade since the beginning of the current Iranian year (starting on March 20).
