Hyundai Motor sets half-year sales record in India

SEOUL, July 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. posted a half-year sales record in India in the first half of the year on strong shipments of subcompact cars launched earlier this year, industry sources said Sunday.
Hyundai Motor sold a total of 187,918 vehicles in the January-June period, up 7.3 percent from the 175,124 units sold during the same period a year earlier, according to the sources.
The first-half sales number represents a 3.5 percent increase from the previous half-year record of 181,596 units set during the second half of last year.
Hyundai Motor's strong sales in India was attributed to the growing popularity of its small cars, including the i10, the i20 and the Verna.
In the first half, Hyundai Motor sold 80,936 units of the i10, with sales of the i20 reaching 42,852. Shipments of the Verna, launched in May, came to 4,334 units for that month and 4,088 in June, according to the sources.
Hyundai operates a plant in India. In 2010, Hyundai Motor produced 600,480 vehicles at the Indian plant, the largest number ever produced in one year.
