China's trade surplus widens in June
By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG, July 10 (Yonhap) -- China's trade surplus rose in June as imports grew at a slower pace, the Chinese customs authorities said Sunday.
According to the General Administration of Customs, the country's trade surplus stood at US$22.3 billion last month, compared with $13.1 billion in the previous month.
Exports rose 17.9 percent from a year ago to a record monthly high of $161.98 billion and imports grew 19.3 percent to $139.71 billion.
China's export growth rate dropped on-month while imports grew at the slowest pace in 20 months. In May, exports grew 19.4 percent and imports jumped 28.4 percent.
The slower export growth was attributed to uncertainties in global economic recovery, the customs office said. The country's tightening monetary moves, which dampened domestic demand, resulted in lower imports.
In the first half of this year, China's trade surplus fell 18.2 percent from a year ago to reach $44.93 billion.
During the January-June period, exports were up 24 percent to reach $874.3 billion and imports rose 27.6 percent to $829.37 billion.
