Japanese-born panda in Wakayama zoo gives birth to twins
TANABE, Japan, Sept. 13 Kyodo - Giant panda Rauhin gave birth to twin cubs Saturday at Adventure World amusement park in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, becoming the first Japanese-born panda to become a mother.
A female cub weighing about 194 grams was born at 5:35 a.m. and a male cub
weighing about 116 grams was born at 6:49 a.m., the park said.
Rauhin, born in September 2000 at the park, became pregnant through natural
mating in April.
With the new-born cubs, the panda population at the park has grown to eight.
As of the end of August, 11 zoos in six countries other than China are taking
care of a total of 32 pandas, according to the park.
