Turkmen President Views Cooperation with Iran as His Best Achievement

TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov underscored his country's eagerness to further promote bilateral ties with Tehran, and reiterated that development of cooperation with Iran has been the most important achievement of his presidency.
Berdimuhamedov said the successful implementation of important joint economic plans with Iran, specially construction of Daulatabad-Sarakhs-Khangiran gas pipeline and Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway, have been his most important achievements since he ascended to power in late December 2006.
He further pointed to the construction and operation of the second gas pipeline which transfers Turkmen gas to Iran, and stressed that such giant projects could be implemented only as a result of the two countries' strong political will and the industrious efforts of Iranian and Turkmen experts.
Iran has in recent years enhanced efforts to boost political, economic and cultural ties and cooperation with the regional and neighboring countries, specially those in the Central Asia.
As a result of the same efforts, the Turkmen President in a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in late June described Tehran as a reliable partner for Ashgabat, and demanded a further expansion of relations and cooperation between the two states.
The Iranian and Turkmen officials have in their recent meetings agreed to boost gas cooperation between the two countries after they implemented the second gas pipeline project to increase Iran's gas imports from the Central Asian state.
The second pipeline which passes through Dauletabad, Sarakhs and Khangiran regions was constructed after Iran felt extensive problems in supplying gas to its Northern parts, which are far from the national grid.
The last section of the 1.2-billion-dollar gas pipeline between the two countries was inaugurated by Ahmadinejad and his Turkmen counterpart in late November.
The 1024-km-pipeline has a daily capacity of 50 mcm. The 48-inch diameter pipeline allows Iran to swap Turkmen gas to other countries.
The first phase of the pipeline came on stream in January 2010 to deliver gas from Turkmenistan's Dauletabad field to Iran's Khangiran refinery.
