Iran Urges Int'l Measures to Prevent Recurrence of Srebrenica Massacre

TEHRAN (FNA)-The Iranian Foreign Ministry extended Iran's condolences to the people of Bosnia over the Srebrenica massacre, and called on the international community to take proper measures to prevent recurrence of such tragic events.
The ministry issued a statement in which it described the July 1995 massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in the presence of UN peacekeepers in the Srebrenica safe zone as a tragedy, and offered condolences to the bereaved families of Srebrenica.

It also urged all relevant international bodies to take every action necessary to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The statement condemned the silence and inaction of certain Western countries and international bodies at the time the atrocities occurred.

More than 600 newly-identified victims of Srebrenica massacre by Serb forces were laid to rest during a service on Monday, which was the 16th anniversary of the massacre.

The bodies were recovered from mass graves over the past year and identified by means of DNA tests.

The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide, refers to the July 1995 killing of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, by units of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) under the command of General Ratko Mladic during the Bosnian War, in the largest mass murder committed in Europe since World War II. A paramilitary unit from Serbia known as the Scorpions, officially part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991, participated in the massacre.

Fugitive Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic has been arrested in Serbia after 16 years on the run.

Mladic, 69, was found in a village in Northern Serbia where had been living under an assumed name.

After being captured by Serbian forces on 26 May, General Mladic was extradited to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) despite his claim of being terminally ill with cancer.
