Expedia seeks to tap S. Korean tourism market

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) -- Expedia Inc., a U.S.-based online tourism company, has launched a Korean Web site in a bid to establish its presence in the fast-growing South Korean travel market, industry sources said Wednesday.
According to the sources, Expedia will officially start its business in South Korea on July 20. Its Korean Web site (http://www.expedia.co.kr) is already in operation.
Hotel reservation services are available in Korean on the Web site, which is expected to add other services such as booking flights or cruises and renting cars in the near future, said the sources.
The expansion of Expedia, which provides over than 5,000 travel products and services with a network of 130,000 hotels worldwide, will add diversity to the South Korean travel market, where 17 percent of travelers book their trips through the country's leading travel agency, Hana Tour Service Inc.
"We have to see whether Expedia gets results here because South Korean agencies have a competitive edge in some areas," said an official from a local travel agency.
