PM further strengthens Laos-Myanmar ties

VIENTIANE,JULY.(KPL)- 11 July-President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Thein Sein held a discussion with Prime Minister of Lao People’s Democratic Republic Mr. Thongsing Thammavong, who is currently here on a goodwill visit, at the President Office here at 5:20 pm, said new light of Myanmar.
Present on the occasion together with the President were Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ko Ko, Union Minister for Defence Maj- Gen Hla Min, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin, Union Minister at the President Office U Thein Nyunt, Union Minister for Construction U Khin Maung Myint, Union Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Tin Naing Thein, Union Minister for Transport U Nyan Tun Aung, Union Minister for Commerce U Win Myint, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Maung Myint, Deputy Minister for Sports U Aye Myint Kyu, Myanmar Ambassador to Lao PDR U Nyunt Hlaing, Director-General of the President Office U Min Zaw, Director- General of the Union Government U Tin Myo Kyi, Director-General of Protocol Department U Kyaw Kyaw and departmental officials.
Together with the Laotian Prime Minister were Laotian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Nilahath Sayarath and high-ranking officials.
President U Thein Sein said that on behalf of the Myanmar government and the people, he warmly welcomed the Laotian Prime Minister and the goodwill delegation. He said he was also pleased to welcome the delegation as it was the first visit of the Laotian Prime Minister after he had taken office.
Again, it was a pleasure for him to meet the Prime Minister again after they had met together at the 18th ASEAN Summit. The President said he believed that the Prime Minister’s visit would further strengthen the existing friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Myanmar honoured and praised the Laotian government and the people for the recent successful election and formation of new government in Lao PDR. The President added that he honoured the Prime Minister for being reelected. Myanmar honoured and praised Lao PDR for successfully holding SEA Games.
Then, the President said he wished the Prime Minister and goodwill delegation good health and happiness while they were in Myanmar.
The visiting Laotian Prime Minister said it is a pleasure for him and the Laotian delegation to pay a goodwill visit to Myanmar. He thanked Myanmar for its warm welcome and hospitality.
The Prime Minister said he honoured the President and the Union Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar for being able to form a new government after successfully holding the general elections in November 2010 in accord with the constitution. He added that he firmly believes the new government under the President’s leadership will bring fruitful results to the Myanmar people and make greater contribution to the international and regional peace, stability and development cooperation. Lao PDR strongly supports Myanmar for its efforts to host the 4th GMS Summit at the end of 2011, XXVII SEA Games in 2013 and 24th and 25th ASEAN Summits in 2014. As Lao PDR will host Asia-Europe Summit in late November of 2012, the Prime Minister said he would like to invite the President to attend the summit. The existing friendly relations and close cooperation between the two countries not only bring about tangible results but also further strengthen the international and regional peace, stability and development cooperation.
Moreover, the President and the Laotian Prime Minister explained developments of both countries and exchanged views on bilateral relations, security cooperation along Mekong Basin, border region peace and stability, seeking ways to promote bilateral trade, bilateral cooperation in culture, tourism, religious affairs and education, mutual cooperation in international and regional issues and ways to promote the existing friendly relations.
They also exchanged views on the efforts of Lao PDR for the success of poverty alleviation and rural development in accord with 2015 UN Millennium Development Goals and transforming the nation into an industrialized one in 2020 and Myanmar’s efforts for implementation of the eight tasks for rural development and poverty alleviation.
