Lee discusses economic cooperation with Spain's foreign minister

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak met with Spain's top diplomat on Wednesday and discussed economic cooperation and bilateral relations between the two countries, the presidential office said.
Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez arrived earlier in the day for a two-day visit.
She is scheduled to meet with her South Korean counterpart Kim Sung-hwan on Thursday for talks on boosting cooperation in renewable energy, aerospace, defense and cultural exchanges.
Lee told Jimenez that he hopes to expand trade and investment between the two countries now that a free trade agreement between South Korea and the European Union has taken effect, the presidential office said in a release.
Jimenez said that the trade pact is the first of its kind that the EU has concluded with an Asian nation and that she believes the agreement will further deepen relations between Spain and South Korea, according to the statement.
Lee asked for Spain's continued support for South Korea's position on issues on the Korean Peninsula.
Jimenez reaffirmed her government's firm support for Seoul and expressed hope that the two countries will work closely on other international issues as well, the statement said.
