Aso almost certain to become next LDP leader: poll

TOKYO, Sept. 14 Kyodo - Ruling Liberal Democratic Party Secretary General Taro Aso has obtained a support rate of 50.7 percent among party members, making it almost certain that he will win the LDP's presidential election, a Kyodo News poll showed Sunday.

Former Defense Minister Yuriko Koike, 56, is a distant second with a support rate of 8.1 percent.

The LDP's presidential election is set for Sept. 22, and the winner will
succeed Yasuo Fukuda as the party's leader as well as the prime minister of
Japan.
The poll was conducted Saturday and Sunday by telephone on those who said they
are members or fraternity members of the LDP with voting rights for a party
leader election. The survey results are based on 1,445 responses.
Aso and Koike are followed by former LDP policy chief Nobuteru Ishihara, 51,
with a support rate of 7.5 percent, Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Kaoru
Yosano, 70, with 5.1 percent, and former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, 51,
with 3.5 percent.
Aso also was top choice in 45 of Japan's 47 prefectures, while Koike and Ishiba
topped other nominees in their respective constituencies of Tokyo and Tottori.
However, the poll found that 18.7 percent of the respondents had not yet
decided who to vote for.
According to the poll results, the election is expected to be settled in just
one round of voting with Aso, 67, set to win.
In a separate Kyodo News estimate last week, he was certain to secure more than
200 votes from 387 Diet members of the LDP, taking a large lead over Yosano who
was certain to get about 50 votes.
Koike, Ishihara and Ishiba were expected to obtain a maximum 30 votes,
respectively, according to the estimates.
In the LDP presidential election, the five candidates will vie for an overall
majority from 528 ballots -- 387 ballots from Diet members and 141 from
prefectural representatives. The party's regular and fraternity members will
cast ballots by prefecture ahead of time so their choice will be reflected by
the representatives.
If no candidate wins an overall majority, a runoff election will be held
between the top two candidates.
But according to a recent estimate, Aso is likely to obtain more than 120 of
the 141 prefectural ballots.
