JCS chairman receives U.S. military decoration

SEOUL, July 14 (Yonhap) -- The chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on Thursday received a U.S. military decoration for his contribution to peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region, the JCS here said.
Gen. Han Min-koo received the Legion of Merit from the U.S. government. The JCS said it's the highest U.S. military decoration issued to military figures of foreign governments.
Han also met with Adm. Michael Mullen, the visiting chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. During the meeting, Han stressed the commitment of Seoul and Washington to peace and stability in the region.
"The South Korea-U.S. alliance is stronger than ever, and will never condone any provocation from North Korea," Han was quoted as saying. "And the stability of the Korean Peninsula is critical to the stability and order of Northeast Asia, and the chairmen of Joints Chiefs of Staff in both the South and the U.S. will continue to cooperate closely."
According to the JCS here, Han also recognized Mullen's contribution to the peace in the area over his four-year term. Mullen, who received the Tong-Il Medal of the Order of National Security Merit from the South Korean government Wednesday, will retire on Sept. 30.
About 28,500 American troops are stationed in South Korea to deter threats from North Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, leaving the two sides still technically at war.
