S. Korea speeds up preparations for 2018 Winter Olympics

SEOUL, July 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will soon launch its preparations for the 2018 Winter Olympics in its alpine town of PyeongChang with the goal of making it an economical, environment-friendly and culturally rich event, the culture ministry said Thursday.
The country will assemble an organizing committee for the Olympics within three months, which is two months ahead of the deadline set in a contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the ministry said.

"We will all be preparing to successfully host the Winter Games so South Korea can make a new leap as a sports power through the event following its hosting of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and the 2002 FIFA World Cup co-hosted with Japan," culture minister Choung Byoung-gug said in a press briefing.
South Korea will also legislate a special law to support PyeongChang's hosting of the international sports event as early as possible while convening a committee overseeing the government's support for the event on a regular basis, the ministry said.
"The government aims to make it a 'cultural, environmental and economical' Olympics that can produce attractions based on the country's eco-friendly and efficient infrastructure," Choung said.
PyeongChang beat Munich of Germany and Annecy of France in its third attempt to host the event earlier this month, making South Korea the second Asian country to host the Winter Olympics, following Japan.
In the lead-up to the games, Seoul plans to stage Korean cultural performances featuring both traditional and modern artists at major cities across the world every year from 2012 to 2018, making the PyeongChang Olympics a chance to increase the world's awareness of Korea.
During the 2018 Olympics, PyeongChang will also host a global cultural festival that will include performances and exhibitions by participating countries, the ministry said.
All new stadiums to be built for the games will be required to obtain certification through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) eco-friendly building rating system designed by the U.S. Green Building Council, it said.
Also as part of the plan to manage the Olympics in an environment-friendly way, Seoul seeks to drastically reduce the amounts of greenhouse gas emissions during the event by expanding the use of new renewable energy, the government said.
