Culture minister to visit Japanese quake victims
SEOUL, July 14 (Yonhap) -- Culture Minister Choung Byoung-gug will visit Japan on Friday to console earthquake victims and discuss ways to boost tourism between the two countries, his ministry said Thursday.
The visit was arranged to follow up on a bilateral agreement signed during the sixth talks between the tourism ministers of South Korea, China and Japan to build a joint response system to cope with the disaster-caused tourism crisis, according to the ministry. The meeting was held in PyeongChang, 180 kilometers east of Seoul, in May.
During the two-day visit to Tokyo and Sendai, Choung will be accompanied by local tourism industrial figures, the ministry said.
In Tokyo, Choung will attend "a night for expanding South Korea-Japan exchanges" along with Japanese government and tourism officials, it said in a release. He is also scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of a Japanese summer event for encouraging the region's early recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
He will then visit a shelter for disaster victims in Sendai to console them, the ministry said.
The two governments have stepped up efforts to get the combined annual number of tourists to each other's side to surpass the 10 million mark. Last year, the number hit a record high of 5 million, according to the ministry.
