Thai Buddhists to do good on Asalha Pucha Day

BANGKOK, July 15 (TNA) - Buddhists across Thailand are doing good deeds in honor of Asalha Pucha Day, which marks the day of the Buddha’s first sermon, and the origin of foundations in Buddhism: the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
In Bangkok, local communities gathered at Phra Ram 9 temple for merit-making. They also prayed for the beloved Thai monarch King Bhumibol Adulyadej, ahead of his 84th birthday anniversary on December 5 this year.
In Yasothon, people dressed in white to denote purity as they presented to monks glutinous rice and ornately-carved candles for the Buddhist Lent season; while in Surin alms giving on the back of elephants were highlighted locally. Similar activities were also held in Chiang Rai and Trang provinces despite heavy rains.
Meanwhile, the military, local officials and communities in southern Thai border provinces of Narathiwat and Yala prayed for past victims of local insurgency, with candle-lit processions scheduled for this evening under tight security. (TNA)
