Sales of Hyundai, Kia in Europe hit record high in H1
SEOUL, July 18 (Yonhap) -- The combined sales of Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. in Europe reached a record high in the first half of the year, raising their market share to the highest of any Asian carmaker, a European industry group said Monday.
In the January-June period, the South Korean automakers under Hyundai Motor Group sold 346,388 cars in Europe, up 5.2 percent from the same period last year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, better known by its French name, Association des Constructeurs Europeens d'Automobiles (ACEA).
The combined market share of Hyundai and Kia rose 0.3 percentage points to 4.7 percent, the ninth largest of all automakers in Europe and ahead of Japan's largest automaker Toyota Motor Co., whose first-half market share came to 4 percent.
The South Korean companies' sales growth also comes despite Europe's shrinking automobile market. Sales of new cars dropped 1.8 percent on-year to a little more than 7.35 million cars in Europe in the first half, according to the ACEA.
The sales growth of Hyundai and Kia was more evident in June when Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest automaker, sold 36,811 vehicles, up 9.8 percent from a year earlier, and Kia Motors sold 26,735 cars, up 14 percent.
