Rooftop protest on Christmas Island ends

Order has been restored at the Christmas Island Detention Centre after 11 asylum seekers launched a rooftop protest overnight.
On Sunday night, a group of 11 asylum seekers climbed on the roof at the detention centre's main compound which mainly holds single adult males.
The rooftop protest begun overnight but staff from the centre's service provider Serco negotiated with the asylum seekers and they have all climbed down.
According to refugee advocate Ian Rintoul the protest was triggered by the transfer of one asylum seeker to a different area inside the detention centre.
Mr Rintoul said the area was called the behavioural management unit, where asylum seekers are allegedly placed in solitary confinement but kept under surveillance.
A Department of Immigration spokesperson would not speculate on what sparked the protest but said calm had been restored.
