Iran Renews Preparedness to Send Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of Iran's Red Crescent Society Aboulhassan Faqih underlined the society's preparedness to send humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.
"If the necessary grounds are prepared, Iran's Red Crescent Society's humanitarian aids will be sent to Gaza," Faqih said in a letter to Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on Monday.
The announcement came after the OIC had called on the charity centers and Red Crescent societies of the Arab and Islamic countries to send humanitarian aids and supplies, particularly medical items, to the Gaza Strip after crisis intensified and an acute lack of medicine started in the coastal area.
In his letter, Faqih called on the Islamic organization to prepare the necessary ground for people's free access to international aids.
The Iranian official further condemned the Zionist regime of Israel for maintaining the siege of Gaza, and lauded the opening of the Rafah border crossing by Egypt.
The siege of Gaza started in June 2007 when Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip. This was supported by the governments of Egypt and the US at the time.
The blockade consists of a land blockade along Gaza's borders with Egypt and Israel and a sea blockade. It immediately followed the 2006-2007 economic sanctions against the Palestinian National Authority following the election of Hamas to the Palestinian government.
The blockade has attracted criticism from many Human Rights organizations. September 2009 UN fact-finding mission found that the blockade of Gaza "amounted to collective punishment" was likely a war crime and a crime against humanity and recommended that the matter be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
