Combination of strong photo-, text-journalism like 'one-two punch': photo awards judge

NEW YORK, July 18 (Yonhap) -- A strong photo and equally strong text put together leads to effective journalism that is both meaningful and easily understood, the chief judge of a press photo contest said.
The remarks by Santiago Lyon, director of photography of The Associated Press (AP), came on Monday ahead of the Yonhap International Press Photo Awards (YIPPA), hosted by Yonhap News Agency. Lyon chairs the board of judges for the contest, whose winners will put their photos on display at exhibitions in Seoul and New York next month.
"I think the combination of a strong photograph with a strong text story is like a one-two punch. It's very effective," Lyon said in a recent interview with Yonhap News Agency. "Because the photograph is immediate and quickly interpreted. And I think what the text does is adds the necessary context to explain the details of what was going on and give more depth than the photograph by itself."

Lyon, with 26 years of experience in photojournalism, is the winner of numerous awards for his coverage of conflict areas such as Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has been AP's director of photography since December 2003.
"I think photojournalism is all about communication, and about visual communication," he said. "(It is about) telling stories through photographs in a way that is effective and immediate and unforgettable because of the power of the still photograph."
Under the slogan of "Share the Moment, Share the Future," the YIPPA draws entries from photojournalists and freelancers working for the press, and supports the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), according to the event's Web site. All entries must have themes related to the eight MDGS that include freedom from extreme poverty and hunger; achievement of universal primary education; and eradication of diseases.
"I think that the themes are very specific in that they deal with real problems. So I think the photographs that are related to each category will have a relationship to very real issues," Lyon said.
Exhibitions of the winning photos will run from Aug. 10 to Sept. 30 at the Old Seoul Station Museum in Seoul and from Aug. 22 to Sept. 9 at the U.N. Headquarters Visitor's Lobby in New York.
