China's auto exports rise 50 pct in Jan.-May

HONG KONG, July 19 (Yonhap) -- China's automobile exports rose about 50 percent on-year in the first five months of this year, indicating growing demand for Chinese cars from overseas, an industry report said Tuesday.
According to the report by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, China's overseas shipments of vehicles reached 298,800 units in the January-May period, up 53.8 percent from a year earlier.
In value terms, exports increased 47.6 percent on-year to US$3.63 billion. Last year, the comparable figure was US$2.46 billion.
Yang Aiguo, deputy secretary-general at the chamber, expected Chinese automakers will continue to see growth in their exports during the rest of the year.
"As the global economy gradually recovers, China's auto industry will likely take off down the road," Yang said.
Last year, China exported 282,900 units of passenger cars and 261,900 units of commercial vehicles.
Major export destinations of Chinese automobiles were emerging markets such as Algeria, Syria, Brazil, Chile, Russia, Iraq, Iran, Uruguay, Peru, Vietnam and Colombia.
