Ahmadinejad Urges Regional Cooperation in Campaign on Terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stressed the need for collective regional and global efforts in fighting terrorist activities.
Ahmadinejad made the remarks in a phone conversation with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai on Monday night, offering sympathies on behalf of the Iranian nation to the Afghan leader over the recent assassination of Karzai's brother and stressing the need for fighting terrorism.

Last week, Karzai's younger brother Ahmad Wali Karzai was shot dead at his home in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Tuesday.

An Afghan intelligence official confirmed that the assassination was carried out by a visitor to his residence.

President Ahmadinejad also pointed out that enemies of the Afghan nation seek to undermine Afghanistan, and joint regional efforts need to be made in order to tackle the threats of terrorism.

For his part, the Afghan president thanked the Islamic Republic for its support for Afghanistan and expressed hope for the establishment of peace and sustainable security in Iran's eastern neighbor.

In a bid to increase international convergence and coordination in fighting terrorism, Iran hosted the International Conference on Global Fight against Terrorism late June with scores of high-ranking officials and international figures in attendance.

The event brought together senior officials from at least 60 countries, including the Afghan president, and representatives from several international organizations, including the UN.
