Lee, Malaysian king discuss atomic energy cooperation

SEOUL, July 20 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak and Malaysian King Mizan Zainal Abidin on Wednesday discussed ways to enhance cooperation in nuclear energy and other economic fields, South Korea's presidential office said.
"Malaysia has recently successfully overcome the global economic crisis, demonstrating a high level of national competitiveness," a presidential official quoted Lee as saying in a summit with the visiting Malaysian king.

Mizan attended the meeting on the last day of his two-day state visit to South Korea.
Lee called for continued protection and support for South Korean residents and firms in the Southeast Asian country, according to the official.
The president, in particular, emphasized the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation in such fields as nuclear energy development and personnel exchanges, the office said.

South Korea has been stepping up efforts to export nuclear power plants since Korean firms won a US$18.6 billion project in late 2009 to build four atomic power plants in the United Arab Emirates after beating their U.S., Japanese and French rivals.
In response, Mizan was quoted as saying that he hopes cooperation between the two countries will be expanded in such fields as tourism and culture as well as new renewable energy and green technology.
He congratulated Lee on South Korea's success in securing the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, the office said.
