Iran Underlines Serious Combat against Border Insecurities
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran on Tuesday underscored that it is resolved to seriously combat terrorist groups and insecurities along its borders.
"Any attempt by terrorist groups to stir instability and insecurity at our country's borders will be confronted firmly," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said at his weekly press conference here in Tehran today.
The spokesman reiterated that Iran will not allow terrorist groups to carry out moves and acts which endanger the country's bordering areas.
His remarks came after the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced on Sunday that it has disbanded a team of terrorists sent by the Iraq-based armed opposition group, PJAK (Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan), to stage terrorist operations and create insecurity in Northwestern Iran.
"This incident took place at our borders," Mehman-Parast said referring to the IRGC's Sunday announcement, and added, "And as long as such events are incited and different groups continue carrying out terrorist activities at our borders, our response will be firm and strong."
During the Sunday operations, the IRGC forces killed, injured and arrested tens of terrorists and destroyed their headquarters in the bordering areas of Alvatan near Sardasht city in Northwestern Iran.
Iran has recently deployed 5,000 military forces in the Northwestern parts of the country along its joint border with the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
The purpose of the deployment is holding military maneuvers with the aim of stabilizing the border area and fighting counterrevolutionary groups.
Members of the terrorist PJAK group - an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) - regularly engage in armed clashes with Iranian security forces along the country's Western borders with Iraq's Kurdistan region.
Recognized as a terrorist group by Turkey, Iran, Iraq, the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations, the PKK is responsible for many deadly operations in Northern Iraq and Southern Turkey.
