Iran: Seizure of Gaza-Bound Aid Ship Signifies US, Israel's Fear
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani blasted the hijack of a Gaza-bound aid ship by the Zionist regime, and stressed that the attack indicates Israel and its supporters' fear of the ongoing developments in the region.
"The move, which came after a series of diplomatic brokering done to stop the sailing of the aid flotilla towards the people of Gaza, is a political shame in the dossier of the fake (Israeli) regime," Larijani stated, addressing an open session of the parliament here in Tehran on Wednesday.
He lashed out at the US and the western countries for supporting such an embarrassing piracy, and noted," …instead of showing their power, the move signifies the anxiety of the Zionist regime of Israel and the US about the regional developments. Even the supply of drugs and foodstuff to the Gaza people to provide for their (basic) needs makes them (the US and Israel) anxious."
"The event, in fact, should be assessed in a greater regional context, that is within the context of the awakening movements in North African and Middle-Eastern countries."
Yesterday the Israeli navy attacked and seized a French-flagged ship carrying pro-Palestinian activists heading for the blockaded Gaza Strip and forced it to go to Ashdod.
An Israeli military spokesman said the passengers were transferred from Dignité al-Karama to one of the warships sent to intercept it in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The 17-passenger ship planned to sail to Gaza as part of a flotilla carrying activists and aid, but other vessels were prevented from sailing after docking in Greece. Activists accused the Greek government of intervening on Israel's side.
The ruling Palestinian party Hamas condemned the seizure, with spokesman Ismail Rudwan describing it as "piracy, a war crime and a violation of the principles of human rights".
