Iran, Australia Stress Importance of Campaign against Drug, Human Trafficking

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Australian officials in a meeting in Tehran underlined the necessity to reinvigorate international campaign against illicit drugs and human trafficking.
"Given the fact that Iran enjoys considerable experience in fighting industrial drugs trafficking, a delegation from the Australian foreign ministry has traveled to Iran to request a transfer of Iran's experiences in this field to that country," Iranian Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs Ali Abdollahi told reporters after the meeting on Wednesday morning.

Due to the presence of a large number of foreign refugees in Iran and the country's experience in fighting human trafficking, the Australian side asked for further cooperation and exchange of experience with Iran in this regard, he added.

According to Abdollahi, the Australian delegation has also invited the Iranian officials to attend an international conference on campaign against narcotics in Australia in fall.

Iran leads international efforts in fighting drug networks and narcotic traffickers. According to the statistical figures released by the UN, Iran ranks first among the world countries in preventing entry of drugs and decreasing demand for narcotics.

The United Nations credits Iran with the seizure of 80 percent of the opium netted around the world.

On Monday, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yuri Fedotov announced that over 80% of the world's opium seizures and 40% of heroin and morphine seizures are made by Iran's law enforcement police forces.
