Chinese consumers positive about S. Korean products: poll
SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- More than four out of every 10 Chinese consumers think that South Korean products have great quality, a poll showed Thursday, in a positive sign for Seoul's exports to the neighboring country.
According to the survey of 4,187 people in 14 major Chinese cities, 42.5 percent of the respondents said the quality of South Korean goods is very good, with 42.3 percent giving average marks.
The remaining 15.2 percent replied they have negative impressions about the quality of South Korean goods, showed the survey taken by the Institute for International Trade (IIT).
"On the whole Chinese consumers seem to have favorable impressions about Korean-made goods," the IIT said. "This can translate into more demand down the line that could fuel exports to the world's second-largest economy."
China is important because its domestic consumer market reached 15.7 trillion yuan (US$2.43 billion) in 2010, surpassing ninth-ranked India, and is expected to grow by double-digits in the foreseeable future, the think tank said.
The institute under the Korea International Trade Association said Chinese consumers gave high marks to the stylish design of Korean products, with their favorites including mobile phones, cosmetics, clothing and various fashion accessories.
Despite receiving good impressions overall, South Korean companies needed to do more to win support from young Chinese in their 20s, who were less positive about Korean products, the IIT said.
"There is a need to strengthen marketing that can appeal to the so-called Balinghou generation born after 1980, who are expected to lead consumption in the future," it said.
