8 companies accused of illegally receiving incentives for defectors
SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- Eight companies have illegally received incentives aimed at promoting employment for North Korean defectors, a parliamentary report said Thursday.
South Korea has enacted a law to offer financial incentives for three years to companies that hire North Korean defectors. Under the law, the government shoulders about half the expense of the defectors' monthly wages.
But some companies have illegally received the government incentives by manipulating paperwork, the National Assembly said in a report on fiscal year 2010.
The government will take steps to recoup the money from the eight companies and their heads could be indicted, an official of the Unification Ministry said.
He said the ratio of the illegal practice to valid payouts has been decreasing in recent years. The official asked not to be identified as he was not authorized to speak to media.
South Korea is home to more than 21,000 North Koreans who fled hunger and political oppression in their communist homeland, but many of them fail to get decent jobs despite receiving three months of mandatory resettlement training.
