Laos and Malaysia strengthen ICT cooperation

VIENTIANE,JULY.(KPL)- The National ICT Association of Malaysia “PIKOM” yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Lao ICT Commerce Association (LICA) to strengthen the ICT sector.
The MoU was also the highlight of visiting to Laos of Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili.
The ceremony signing of MoU was held at Done Chanh Palace between Chairman of PIKOM, Dato Wei Chuan Beng and President of LICA, Mr. Thanongsinh Kanlagna.
This MoU will be improved the ICT sector in Laos and also exchanging the bilateral information and experience.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Science and Technology of Laos, Boviengkham Vongdara and more than 60 senior officials from the government and private sectors witnessed the ceremony.
Mr. Beng said that the MoU marked the beginning of increased collaboration between the two countries especially in the ICT sector.
“Total trade may be small at present but it is expected to grow by leaps and bounds. As a member of ASEAN, Malaysia and Laos nurture very close trade links,” he said.
Mr. Ongkili said that among Asean nations, Malaysia is one of the leading investors in Laos.
Malaysia’s trade with Laos amounted to USD17.3 million in 2010, with exports to Laos contributing to 86.9 per cent of the total trade, he said.
Malaysia’s business community in Laos was also established the Malaysian-Laotian Business Council, which serves as a vehicle to promote closer ties among the business community to the tow country, and one the areas identified is in ICT.
“I believe our visit will contribute towards further enhancing our existing bilateral trade and cultural relationships. I am also pleased to note that this trade mission has garnered good response from the Lao business community with 82 companies joining this forum. In our trade mission we have members from 10 companies from a wide range of businesses in the ICT sector. We are keen to discuss opportunities for investment and collaboration with the Laotian business community in the ICT related areas that will be of mutual benefit,” said Mr. Ongkili.
“I believe that this trade mission will be a good opportunity to create business partners on the cooperation of ICT sector between two our businessmen,” Mr. Boviengkham said.
LICA is the organisation under the Laos Chamber of Commerce and industry. LICA was established in 2005 grouping together ICT related business enterprises, ISP, hardware/software entrepreneurs and including IT related institutions of learning.
PIKOM is the association representing the information and communications technology industry in Malaysia.
Its membership currently stands at over 1,300 comprising companies involved in a whole spectrum of ICT products and services which commands about 80 per cent of the total ITC trade in Malaysia.
PIKOM works to improve the business climate in the interests o fall its member companies and to promote industry growth in line with national aspirations.
PIKOM’s membership is open to all Malaysian companies who supply ICT products and services in the computing and telecommunications industries.
Both LICA and PIKOM are members of the Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation and World IT and Service Alliance.
