N. Korea, Russia to resume economy talks in late Aug
MOSCOW, July 21 (Yonhap) -- Senior officials of North Korea and Russia will have a meeting on business cooperation in late August in Pyongyang, resuming business talks that stalled in 2007 due to the North's second nuclear test, a source familiar with the matter said Thursday.
The two nations last held business talks in March 2007. Russia put off a planned meeting in May 2009 indefinitely following the North's nuclear test in the same month.
"This meeting will discuss current economy matters between the two nations, including Russia's energy and food aid as well as the North's old Soviet debt," the Moscow-based source said, asking for anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.
The fifth round of economic cooperation meetings will be held on Aug. 25 in Pyongyang, the North's capital, attended by Victor Basargin, Russia's minister of regional development, and Ri Yong-nam, who is North Korea's trade minister, according to the source.
Pyongyang conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and test-fired ballistic missiles three times -- in 1998, 2006 and 2009.
