Sung Kim vows efforts for denuclearization of N. Korea

WASHINGTON, July 21 (Yonhap) -- The nominee to become the new U.S. ambassador to South Korea said Thursday that he will play a bridging role between the allies in resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis and preventing the communist nation's provocations.
"Having focused on this much of the past few years, I hope to continue to contribute to our common efforts to achieve the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in a peaceful manner and better lives for the long-suffering people of North Korea," Sung Kim said in a Senate confirmation hearing.
He was nominated by President Barack Obama in June to serve as his top envoy in Seoul. Kim is the State Department's top Korea expert. He has worked as special envoy for six-way talks on North Korea's nuclear program since 2008.
"If confirmed, I look forward to coordinating closely on negotiating strategy as well as efforts to deter provocative actions by North Korea," Kim added.
If confirmed, Kim will become the first Korean-born U.S. ambassador to South Korea.
"When my parents brought me to the United States some 35 years ago, they could not have imagined that I would have the opportunity to serve as the first Korean-American Ambassador to the Republic of Korea," he said, using South Korea's official name.
