USFK commander cancels trip to border island
SEOUL, July 22 (Yonhap) -- Gen. James Thurman, the new commander of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) and Combined Forces Command (CFC), canceled his trip Friday to a western border island attacked by North Korea last year due to inclement weather, the CFC said.
Thurman had been scheduled to visit Yeonpyeong Island Friday to be debriefed on North Korean forces' recent movements and on South Korean Marines' readiness. North Korea fired artillery on Yeonpyeong last November, killing four people, including two civilians.
It was the second deadly attack the North launched on the South in 2010, following a March torpedoing of the warship Cheonan that killed 46 sailors.
"Gen. Thurman will tour frontline areas and USFK units," a CFC official said. "We don't know yet when he will reschedule his trip to Yeonpyeong."
Thurman replaced Gen. Walter Sharp last week.
