N. Korea reports death of senior military general

SEOUL (Yonhap) - One of North Korea's senior military generals, Vice Marshal Ri Jong-san, has died of an unspecified illness, the North's state media said Monday.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il expressed "deep condolences" over the Saturday death of Ri at the age of 87, the North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
Ri was one of eight vice marshals among the North's 1,586 general-level officers as of September last year, according to data by Seoul's Unification Ministry.
Born in 1922 in China, Ri fought with North Korea's late founder, Kim Il-sung, against Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule on the Korean Peninsula, the KCNA report said.
