Lower Mekong countries boost cooperation with US

VIENTIANE,JULY.(KPL)- The 3rd Lower Mekong-US Ministerial Meeting was held in Bali, Indonesia, on July 22, on the sidelines of the 44th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 44).
The meeting, chaired by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, involved Foreign Ministers from the four Lower Mekong countries, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
Participants at the meeting committed to resolve regional issues, aiming towards a peaceful, prosperous region. They reviewed achievements in implementing a number of programmes including the English-language training project for experts working in the four main pillars of cooperation: health, education, environmental protection and infrastructure, and the Forecast Mekong project, which sends environmental scientists to hold training workshops and help develop models for measuring important data.
Ministers at the meeting hailed the clean cookstove initiative which will help reduce harmful smoke and improve the living standards of local people, especially women and children.
They also agreed on the US initiative to invite more developed partners like Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Australia, New Zealand, the European Union (EU), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to join in the Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM) group.
At the later FLM Ministerial Meeting, Foreign Ministers from these developed partners were briefed on development cooperation among counties and organisations in the Mekong region and pledged to provide more support for the region.
