Singapore awards 2011 Singapore Scholarship to Lao student

VIENTIANE,JULY.(KPL)- The government of Singapore yesterday awarded the 2011 Singapore Scholarship to Ms. Sousata Chemcheng to pursue her undergraduate studies in Singapore.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore, Mr. Dileep Nair hosted a farewell tea for Miss Sousata and her family at the Embassy of Singapore.
Ms. Sousata, 20, will pursue a course in Mathematics and Economics at the Nanyang Technology University.
She is scheduled to depart for Singapore by the end of July this year.
In this remark, Mr. Nair noted that Ms Sousata had studied previously at Pre-University level in Singapore under the ASEAN Scholarship from 2005 to 2009, and congratulated her for being awarded with the Singapore Scholarship 2011 to continue her tertiary studies in Singapore, and wished her well for her studies and her stay in Singapore.
The Singapore Scholarship is part of the Singapore government’s long-term objective of assisting its ASEAN neighbour to develop their human resources.
The scholarship is offered to outstanding students in ASEAN to enable them to pursue undergraduate studies in top universities in Singapore.
Lao student have been offered the Singapore Scholarship since 1999. The Scholarship covers fill tuition fees, return airfares and an annual living allowance.
At the 6th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998, then Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong announced that Singapore would offer undergraduate scholarships to ASEAN students.
The Singapore Scholarship is a government to government scheme. Scholars are selected on the basis of their academic merit, leadership qualities and their potential to contribute to community development in their home countries.
The scholars are expected to return to serve their home countries upon their graduation.
Since 1999, scholars from Laos have chosen a wide range of studies, such as Arts and Social Science, Computing, Business Administration, and Engineering.
The knowledge and skills gained through these courses have been relevant to the development needs of Laos.
The Singaporean Scholarship aims to develop close ties and to promote greater friendship among students of ASEAN countries through the experience of living and learning together.
The Singaporean Scholarship underlies Singapore’s firm belief that human resource development is essential for economic development.
Training and education are vital in this age of interdependency and economic integration.
Laos and Singapore are ASEAN neighbours that enjoy a chose and warm relationship.
Singapore is committed to sharing our experience and expertise with Laos and our ASEAN friends in a practical and tangible way via Singapore’s technical assistance programme.
