S. Korea pushing to start emission tests on motorbikes from 2013

SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) -- The Environment Ministry said Tuesday it is pushing to adopt emission tests on motorbikes and other two-wheeled vehicles from 2013 as part of efforts to reduce pollutant traffic fumes.
According to the new regulation, motorcycles and other two-wheel vehicles with an engine size of over 260 cubic centimeters will be subject to the annual smog check two years from now, the ministry said. Owners of smaller-engine bikes will also be required to have their vehicles checked from 2016, it added.

The compulsory annual pollutant emission check, currently enforced only on cars, will affect bikes manufactured and used for more than three years, according to the ministry.
"Introduction of the emission checks on two-wheel vehicles is expected to improve air quality and reduce noise as well as prevent illegal vehicle alterations," a ministry official said.
The ministry will accept specialist input through a public hearing in order to modify and supplement the regulation aimed at preserving air quality, the official said.
As of the end of June, about 1.83 million registered motorbikes were on the road, accounting for 9.1 percent of the total number of vehicles. They are responsible for 56,000 tons of carbon monoxide emissions and 9,100 tons of volatile organic compounds annually.
