Park Tae-hwan finishes fourth in 200-meter freestyle at world championships

SHANGHAI, July 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan finished fourth in the men's 200-meter freestyle race at the 2011 FINA World Aquatics Championships here Tuesday.
At the Oriental Sports Center, Park came in at 1 minute 44.92 seconds. Park was only 0.04 seconds behind the third-ranked Paul Biedermann of Germany.
American Ryan Lochte took the title at 1:44.44, followed by compatriot Michael Phelps at 1:44.79.
The 21-year-old South Korean had qualified with the fourth best time, behind Yannick Agnel of France, Biedermann and Lochte. Swimming in the sixth lane, Park had the fastest reaction time with 0.66 seconds off the pad.
But Park quickly fell behind and was fifth in the first 50節? split. He fell another spot at the halfway mark, and recovered to fifth with 50節? left.
His patented final spurt, though, wasn't nearly enough this time.
Park's personal best in the 200節? free is 1:44.80, the Asian record and the gold medal-winning time at last year's Guangzhou Asian Games.
Last Sunday, Park won the 400節? freestyle for his second career world title in that distance. He is also scheduled to compete in 100節? freestyle this week. The heat and the semifinal are set for Wednesday and the final is Thursday.
