S. Korean parliamentary library, Hong Kong university agree to cooperate in sharing academic info
HONG KONG, July 26 (Yonhap) -- The Chinese University of Hong Kong said on Tuesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the South Korean National Assembly Library (NAL) to cooperate in using and sharing South Korea's national archives.
The MOU was signed by Victor Lee, director of the University's school of continuing studies, and Yoo Jae-il, the chief librarian of the NAL, at the university's downtown campus in Hong Kong.
Under the MOU, the Chinese University will gain access to some 140 million copies of digitized books and journals at South Korea's biggest library.
It is one of the first foreign universities to have such access, along with Yale University and Stanford University in the U.S.
The university said the agreement is expected to contribute to expanding information sources on South Korea's politics, culture and economy.
The NAL has made efforts to establish digital networks with 1,117 institutions of the media, colleges, government agencies and public libraries to widen national information and knowledge sharing.
The Chinese University has organized since 2005 the annual Korean speech contest to provide a platform for Korean learners in Hong Kong and mainland China to showcase their Korean-language ability.
The school's Korean Language Education and Culture Center was conferred last year the title of a King Sejong Institute by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in recognition of its high quality of Korean language education as well as its achievements in promoting Korean culture. It is the first and only institution in Hong Kong to receive the title.
