Six killed as landslide destroys mountain resort

CHUNCHEON (Yonhap) - Heavy torrential rains pounded the nation's central regions, causing a landslide in a mountain resort east of Seoul that killed at least six and destroyed four buildings, emergency rescue workers said Wednesday.
The landslide, which occurred just after midnight near the Soyang River Dam about 100 kilometers east of Seoul, destroyed a pension and three homes.
The six killed in the pension were all college students from Incheon's Inha University. They were in the area for volunteer work.

Rescue workers and police said that there were 40 people in the four buildings and 26 of them were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries. They said six people were trapped inside the destroyed buildings and needed to be rescued. Over 500 firefighters and police have been sent to the area to speed up the rescue.
Of those rescued, two are reported to be in critical condition.
