Military enhances security ahead of Daegu athletics championships
SEOUL (Yonhap) - The South Korean military will lend support to ensure the safe staging of an upcoming international athletics event in Daegu, an official said Wednesday.
The official with the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the JCS issued directives to subordinate units earlier this month to guard against potential armed provocations or cyber terrorism during the World Championships in Athletics.
The International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) event will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 4 in the southeastern metropolis, some 300 kilometers from Seoul.
"The JCS believes the athletics event will once again help raise the profile of our nation, much as the Group of 20 Summit in Seoul did (last year)," the official told Yonhap News Agency. "To ensure the safe and successful hosting of the championships, we've ordered operations commands for all branches to be vigilant with their preparedness."
As of last week, nearly 2,500 athletes from 207 countries have registered to compete in Daegu. The figures would make the Daegu championships the largest ever, topping 2,101 athletes from 202 nations at the 2009 Berlin event.
In addition, thousands of officials, fans and members of the media are expected to attend.
The official also said the 2nd Army Operations Command briefed the JCS on its plans to execute related missions. The command is responsible for security in provinces and metropolitan cities in the southeastern and southwestern parts of the country.
The official added that the JCS sent an inspection team of eight officials to Daegu on Tuesday for a four-day assignment to check upon military preparedness, contingency planning and cooperation with related agencies.
