Obama proclaims Korean War Armistice Day

WASHINGTON (Yonhap) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday issued a proclamation to commemorate the National Korean War Armistice Day this week, calling on all Americans to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Obama's annual move came on the eve of the anniversary of the armistice ending the three-year war signed on July 27, 1953.
"Our veterans' courage and sacrifice have enabled the Republic of Korea to flourish as a strong and prosperous nation for over half a century," Obama said in the proclamation. "In the decades following the Armistice, the American and South Korean people have maintained a warm friendship, and our alliance is stronger than ever."
On the occasion of the anniversary, he added, the U.S. government pays its deepest respects to those who lost their lives during the war.
More than 30,000 U.S. soldiers were killed in the war, according to official data.
In 2009, U.S. Congress passed a bill to have July 27th marked by Americans with flags flying at half staff.
