Iran Dismisses Reports on Shell, BP Station Building Offer

TEHRAN (FNA)- Managing-Director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) Jalil Salari rejected reports that Shell and British Petroleum (BP) have offered to construct petrol, gasoline and CNG stations in Iran.
"We have not received such a proposal from the two companies so far," Salari was quoted by the Iranian students news agency as saying.
Some media outlets had said that the two corporations sent letters to the Iranian Oil Ministry, offering construction and expansion of petrol, gasoline and CNG chain stations in the country.
In similar remarks the director of the Iranian gas and petrol station owners association also stated that he was not informed of such a request.
"The request amid weak financial situation of Iranian station owners following the rise in oil products price, shows they (the two companies) may seek selling their own products or making publicity for them."
Iran started a gasoline rationing scheme around two years ago. Under the plan, motorists are allowed to buy 60 liters per month at the price of rials 1,000 (around 10US cents) per liter.
The plan envisions allocation of 25 liters of gasoline for motorcycles and the same amount for the public sector vehicles, including pick-up trucks, taxis and cabs, each month of summer.
A monthly ration of 500 liters of semi-subsidized gasoline has also been considered for the purpose. The smart card system will be dismantled for ever gradually on a government decision.
Iran is scrambling to boost its refining capacity and tamp down domestic demand through other measures, including replacing gasoline-consuming car engines with gas-powered engines.
